AT&T American Cup

Texans, celebrate! We are very lucky to announce that for the first time in a long time (since 1998 to be exact) we can enjoy beautiful world class gymnastics in our state! The AT&T American Cup is coming to Arlington, TX at the AT&T Stadium. Gymnasts such as Carly Patterson, Nastia Liukin, and Gabby Douglas are reigning champions of this high-caliber competition. Attending this event really gives the audience a look at the best of the best of Team USA.

The first American Cup dates back all the way to 1976. For its first 2 years, 1976-77, the American Cup had no major sponsors and was held in New York, NY. The very first American Cup champions were Bart Connor (USA) and Nadia Comaneci (Romania). Kathy Johnson was the first women from the US to win the competition in 1977!

Beginning in 1982 McDonald’s became the first major sponsor to take hold of the American Cup, and between the years of 1982 to 1996 it stayed that way. Between those years the competition was held all across the US; New York, Fairfax, Orlando, Indianapolis. The final year of the McDonalds American Cup in 1996 was held in Fort Worth, TX. All previous winners of this prestige competition have gone on to even bigger accomplishments such as World and Olympic Champions. (Kim Zmeskal, Dominique Dawes, Kurt Thomas, Jon Roethlisberger, Kerri Strug, Paul Hamm…the list goes on and on!)

In 1997, VISA became the new name of the American Cup and it was so up until 2005 where Tyson came into the picture. This international competition is a great way for the USA to stand against the rest of the world in preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games. It has been known as the AT&T American Cup since 2011.
